Have strange people started to harass your friends on Facebook? If you or your friends have noticed strange activities, you might want to learn how to hide your friends on Facebook. With 2.2 billion people on Facebook, you can never be too careful and will want to learn how to hide friends on Facebook.

There is a setting that will allow you to keep people, both the public and friends, from seeing your friends list. Keep in mind that your Facebook friends will be able to see your mutual friends even though they can’t see your whole friend’s list.

Continue reading this article and we will show you how to hide friends on Facebook.

You’re Going Public

Whether you know it or not, when you go on Facebook most of your information is set to public by default. If you want any of your information to be hidden from prying eyes, you’re going to have to manually set each specific part of your profile to friends only or private.

If you’ve ever tried to contact Facebook on the phone, you probably already know they are anything but helpful. Trying to navigate their support forums is also very trying.

Since Facebook wants to keep as much of your information public as possible, they don’t make it easy for you to figure out — but we’re here to help. Here are the steps below.

Step 1

Open Facebook on your desktop or laptop. It’s easier to take care of setting changes on these devices than on your phone.

Step 2

On the top, ride side of your screen, you’ll see a small down arrow that you need to click to reveal the menu.

Step 3

Once the menu is open, look near the bottom where you’ll see the Settings and you’ll click here.

Step 4

On the left-hand side, look for the word Privacy and click there.

Step 5

Now you’ll be able to see the section where it says “How People Can Find and Contact You”. In this section, look for the option that says “Who can see my friend’s list?” To the right of this question, you need to click edit.

Step 6

Once you click on edit, your current setting will come up and will say “Public”. Click on “Public” and a drop-down menu will come up. You need to click “Only Me” and it will automatically update.

If you’ve gone through the steps above, your Facebook friend’s list is now private. Only you will be able to see your friend’s list.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

Though you have your Facebook friend’s list set to “Only Me”, people may still be able to see that you’re friends with people through their profiles. Depending on their settings, people may get newsfeed updates about your friendship.

For instance, if you have a friend named Tom and a friend named Bob and Bob and Tom are also friends. You are friends with Tom but you don’t want Bob to know.

You friend Tom on Facebook. While the update about you and Tom becoming friends doesn’t come up on your profile, it does come up on Bob’s newsfeed saying that you and Tom are now friends.

If you are worried that you might get caught with your activity on Facebook, it is possible even if you hide your friend’s list.

Hiding the friend’s list is best used when you don’t want people to be able to go through your friend’s lists to harass your friends.

Keeping Your Information Safe on Facebook

Facebook already collects a great deal of information on you. You want to make sure that you keep yourself and your information as safe as possible.

If you don’t want Facebook and third parties to know about things in your life, make sure you don’t talk about them on social media. Whether you talk about them through messenger, on your timeline or comment it on someone’s page, Facebook likely has a record of it.

The best practice you can do when you want to keep information from getting out but you still want to communicate through Facebook is through a live call. Either video or audio calls are much less likely to leave your information floating around in Facebook land.

Even innocent information like your birthday could leave you vulnerable to attacks. If you use your birthday as a security code or a security question, you shouldn’t post it on your Facebook page.

Even if your Facebook page is private, you never know when one of your friends might get hacked and the hacker will be able to see your private information.

The internet can be a scary place but knowing how to avoid schemes and hacking is extremely important.

If you think that you’ve been a part of a phishing scheme to get your private information, make sure to change your password quickly. If you have any questions about how to recover your account once it’s been hacked or other problems, we can help you so you can get back into your back and warn your friends.
